Our History

Albright Studios was founded by the late Evelyn Albright, one of the early ‘Tivoli Gals’. She opened the Footscray dance school in 1940, and after nearly three decades of dedication, retired in 1968, passing the school on to her daughter, Carol Fairy.

Carol was a highly respected teacher and COMDANCE examiner, known for her strong focus on technique and her warm, supportive teaching style. She led the school as Principal for 41 years before her passing in 2010. Carol’s wish was for the school to continue in her honour, proudly maintaining the name Albright that she and her mother had built. She was passionate about ensuring the school remained under the guidance of a COMDANCE-qualified teacher with the knowledge and skill to prepare students for examinations.

In continuing Carol’s legacy, Leanne Emerson — who had been a student, teacher, and close friend of Carol’s for nearly 40 years —administered the school before Tamara Finch took on the role of Director in 2012. After a decade of inspiring and mentoring students, Tamara passed the school on in 2022 to Rebecca Wenig (Leanne’s daughter), who is now the proud owner and Director of Albright Studios.

The school has a rich and special family history. Rebecca’s grandmother, Carolyn, began her journey at the school alongside Evelyn Albright. Later, when Carolyn had her four children, they all trained at Albright under the mentorship of Carol Fairy. Following in their footsteps, Rebecca, together with her sister and cousins, began tuition at the school with Carol Fairy. Remarkably, all three generations have remained actively involved with the school ever since.
